How keyword difficulty works

Before you write content targeting a keyword, it helps to know how much competition you're up against. Each keyword gets a score from 0 to 100 — lower means less competition, higher means the top spots are locked down by established sites. You can check up to 5 keywords at once to compare them side by side.

Understanding difficulty scores

  • Easy (0–29) — low competition, good for new sites and quick wins
  • Medium (30–49) — moderate competition, achievable with quality content
  • Hard (50–69) — strong competition, requires authority and backlinks
  • Very Hard (70–100) — dominated by high-authority sites

Picking the right keywords

Go after the low and medium difficulty keywords first, especially if your site is newer. Once you've built up some backlinks and authority, you can start targeting the harder ones. The sweet spot is usually a keyword with decent search volume and low difficulty — that'll get you more traffic than chasing a high-volume keyword you'll never rank for. Run a few related terms through the checker and go with the easiest ones that still have traffic behind them.
